Land Between The Lakes will host a sustainable tourism business seminar on Saturday, February 18, 2012. Make plans to attend and learn how to improve your current business strategies!

The seminar will be held at the Golden Pond Visitor Center from 8:30am to 2:30pm. Presenters include experts from the Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development, EntrePaducah, U.S. Small Business Administration, Murray State University Small Business Development Center, and Tennessee Department of Tourist Development.

The cost is $20 per person and includes lunch. Sign up before February 16 and pay only $15. Reservations can be made until February 13, by calling the Golden Pond Visitor Center at 270-924-2233. LBL Donates Cedar Christmas Tree to Murray, KY

On Tuesday, November 22 LBL and partner Swift & Staley donated an eastern red cedar to the city of Murray, KY. The 28 feet tall 12 feet in diameter Christmas tree will be on display in front of the downtown court house. The USDA Forest Service has traditionally provided the tree for our nation’s capitol, known as the “People’s Tree.” This year the Stanislaus National Forest in California will harvest a red fir and deliver it to the U.S. Capitol. Anyone who is interested in getting their own LBL cedar tree to obtain a free permit to do so during the holiday season. A cedar tree permit, valid December 1-24, entitles a family to cut one cedar tree at no charge. Permits, maps, and cutting guidelines may be obtained from the LBL Administrative Office, 8am-4:30pm, Monday-Friday, and at the Golden Pond Visitor Center, 9am-5pm Saturday and Sunday. On Christmas Eve, December 24, the Visitor Center will close at 3pm.

Enjoy Holiday Programs at LBL

Celebrate the spirit of the holiday season by getting outdoors in LBL and take part in a variety of fun, traditional, and educational programs!

On Saturday, Nov. 26, from 1-4pm, The Homeplace celebrates Christmas in 1850. Enjoy the smell of homemade cookies, stockings hung over the fireplace, and voices raised in song, signifying that Christmas has come to The Homeplace. Learn to make simple Christmas decorations, collect favorite holiday recipes, and relax to the sound of old-time Christmas tunes with the Dixie Volunteers. Later, join in singing 1800’s Christmas carols as we usher in Santa Claus who will delight everyone with tales from his past.

The Golden Pond Planetarium offers two holiday programs Wed.-Sun., beginning Nov. 25 through Dec. 23. ‘Tis the Season and Christmas Story will allow visitors to discover cultural, seasonal, and religious rituals from around the world. Admission is $4 ages 13 and up; $2 ages 5-12; free 4 and under. Groups of 10 or more may make reservations by calling 270-924-2020.

The Homeplace, Woodlands Nature Station, North and South Welcome Stations, and Golden Pond Planetarium and Visitor Center will be closed Thanksgiving Day.

LBL Honors Veterans Nov. 11-13

LBL will join public lands across the nation in honoring veterans on Veterans Day, Friday, November 11, through Sunday, November 13, with free admission or user fee waiver at designated facilities (other fees may apply).
LBL will offer veterans, active and retired members of the armed forces, and their families’ free admission (with military ID) into The Homeplace, Elk & Bison Prairie (EBP), Woodlands Nature Station, and Golden Pond Planetarium. Veterans may pick up their free entry passes for the EBP at the Golden Pond Visitor Center Nov. 11-13 from 9am-5pm. Also Nov. 11-13, Wranglers Campground will issue a free daily horse trailer permit; and a free vehicle permit will be issued for Turkey Bay Off-Highway Vehicle Area (permits must be issued on-site at Turkey Bay and are good Nov. 11-13 only).
Whether you take a drive through the Elk & Bison Prairie, wander around the backyard at the Nature Station, learn about life on the farm in the 1850s at The Homeplace, ride the trails on an ATV at Turkey Bay, or enjoy a trail ride on horseback at Wranglers, fall is a wonderful time to get outdoors and enjoy the many recreation opportunities available at LBL!

Celebrate Fall Frolic! Saturday, November 5

Enjoy the changing colors and cooling temperatures at LBL when you help Woodlands Nature Station celebrate the fall season, Saturday November 5, 2011.
The “changing of the season” celebration, called Fall Frolic, will feature a variety of environmental education events and fun filled activities, including fall hayrides and live music. Grab your sweater and enjoy an old-fashioned wagon ride through the woods of LBL during one of our fall hayrides. These staff-led rides will include fun learning activities and great nature-viewing opportunities with a musical twist! The 30-minute hayrides are $2 per person and leave regularly throughout the day, 10am-4pm on Saturday. Seating is limited; visitors are required to sign up at the Nature Station front desk that day. Fall hayrides will also be offered on Sunday from 11am-4pm (no music).
Smokey Bear will make appearances throughout Saturday’s Fall Frolic, so bring your camera for some great pictures with the Forest Service mascot.
Admission to NS is $4 ages 13 & up, $2 ages 5-12, free for ages 4 and under. Hayrides are an additional $2 per person. The following is a list of Fall Frolic activities:

Celebrate 18th Annual National Public Lands Day at LBL

Come celebrate National Public Lands Day on Saturday, September 24th at LBL! In honor of the day we will be waiving fees at participating day-use facilities. General admission to The Homeplace (HP), Woodlands Nature Station (NS), Elk & Bison Prairie, and the Golden Pond Planetarium (GPP) show at 1:00pm will be free. Wranglers Campground will also be waiving day-use riding fees.

LBL is joining other National Forests and National Parks across the United States in participating in our nation’s largest one-day volunteer event for public lands. There will be opportunities for volunteers to participate in a shoreline clean-up or a trail maintenance project.

It is recommended, but not necessary, to call to register for volunteer work early. Registrations should be made by September 23rd, especially larger groups. There will be two events taking place that day. The first event is from 8:30am-3:30pm: a trail project on the Fort Henry Trail, meeting at South Welcome. The second event is from 8:00am-12:00pm: a hike/canoe/kayak shoreline cleanup at Honker Dam. Volunteers should bring lunch, a water bottle, and dress for outdoor work. Share your vision of the GPVC Complex in 2040!

We need your input! LBL wants to develop, with public input, a Long Range Facility Plan for the Golden Pond Visitor Center (GPVC) Complex. Changes in the landscape surrounding the GPVC Complex, and changes in tourism and recreation trends since 1979, have affected how the GPVC Complex serves the public. Changes in the landscape include the reconstructed USHwy68/KY80 and bike/hike trail, a new exit and entry sequence off USHwy68/KY80 to The Trace, and the designation of The Trace to Woodlands Trace National Scenic Byway. Examples of changes in tourism trends include new developments in recreation vehicles and gear, technology application, increases or decreases in demand for certain activities, including visitor contact services, and tourism partnership expectations.

We will take a look at all existing components of the GPVC Complex to determine what changes, if any, need to be made. We want to include all aspects of the GPVC Complex, such as the physical buildings, exterior infrastructure, grounds, programming, and services. The GPVC Complex Long Range Plan may identify needs for modifications, additions, discontinuation, relocation, updating, and/or repurposing in order to continue sustainably meeting recreation and education needs in the future.

We will work together with a wide variety of audiences and interested parties in creating a 30 year vision and desired condition for this facility complex. This process will not focus on the problems or issues of the day, but rather the desires and needs of the future. Once this is clearly established, strategies to achieve these goals can be developed.

Children's Day at Homeplace June 11

Visit The Homeplace on Saturday June 11 for Children’s Day: Colors on The Farm. The day will celebrate the International Year of Forests by focusing on how farm families used the forest to color their lives.
Activities will be taking place on the HP farm from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Mother Goose stories and group games will be offered throughout the day at 10-11 a.m., 11 a.m.-12 p.m., 1-2 p.m., and 3-4 p.m. Nashville native and professional storyteller, Cherri Coleman, will charm children with her whimsical portrayal of Mother Goose. Her folklore and traditional tales include games, songs, and hands-on discovery for young and old alike.
Come experience the bright colors that filled the lives of 1850’s farm children. Learn how natural dyes colored their clothing, minerals and plants colored their furniture and homes, and colorful folktales entertained them.

Saturday, May 28 & Sunday, May 29 will be the annual Pickin' Party at The Homeplace. On Saturday, 10am–7pm and Sunday, 11am–6pm enjoy an "Old-Time Music Festival" Born of the heartland, raised in the river valleys, old-time country music this weekend will once again echo in the hills and hollows of LBL. For two days, experience the best of old-time music through workshops, pickin’ sessions, and energized performances of old-time fiddle, banjo, and bluegrass music. Bring your banjo, guitar, fiddle, or harmonica and join in on the fun during daily open mic sessions. Enjoy weekend performances of folk singer and fretless banjo picker, Mark Dvorak, old time string band, The Dixie Volunteers and Cumberland River Plow Boys, Celtic music by Red River Breeze and the best of old time and bluegrass music.

Throughout the day, stroll through the historic buildings, fields and gardens, and talk with the 1850s farm family as they go about their daily chores. 1850s children’s activities will be provided throughout the weekend. Festival food and ice-cold drinks will be available for purchase. Bring lawn chairs or ground blankets. Saturday-Adults $6/Children $4; Sunday-Adults $5/Children $3. Includes same day HP admission. Also make plans to bring the family by Nature Station Saturday, May 28 – Monday, May 30 for River Days 2011. LBL is surrounded by two mighty rivers and 300 miles of undeveloped shoreline. Despite flooding at Land Between The Lakes there are still plenty of activities at our day-use facilities including Golden Pond Planetarium, Woodlands Nature Station, and The Homeplace.
Bring the kids out to Nature Station On Sunday May 15 for Picnic Day for the Animals. We’ll be celebrating the spring season with this special day for the Nature Station’s resident wildlife such as the bobcat, vultures, and red wolves! Throughout the day we are featuring programs that will give you a chance to visit with the animals while they enjoy their favorite treats. Did you know that most of these critters came to the Nature Station from animal rescue centers? Learn the story of how each one came to live at the Nature Station and how their wild relatives survive in nature. Also, help us support local wildlife rehabilitators that do so much to help our local wildlife. Program schedule:

This day will be dedicated to our lovely ladies of the woods, events and information will be geared towards helping Girl Scouts of different levels work towards earning achievement awards. Take advantage of warmer weather with a visit to LBL- we are open for the 2011 season!
The Golden Pond Planetarium and North & South Welcome Stations opened their doors March 1, along with Hillman Ferry and Piney Campgrounds. Beginning March 2, The Homeplace and Woodlands Nature Station will be open Wednesday through Sunday during March, and then open seven days a week beginning April 1.
The Elk & Bison Prairie remains open from dawn until dusk every day, year-round. The Golden Pond Visitor Center, Wranglers Campground, and Turkey Bay Off-Highway Vehicle Area remain open year-round as well.
The spring season brings fresh opportunities for environmental education. We are excited about the programs we have planned for 2011, such as the Spring Break Programs at Nature Station, which provide an excellent way for children to connect with the natural world. Our facilities provide opportunities for hands-on learning, and encourage visitors to get outdoors to experience nature and history for themselves.
The Golden Pond Planetarium, open daily beginning March 1, provides a full dome viewing experience with digital multimedia equipment. Returning to the planetarium in 2011 will be Blown Away: The Wild World of Weather, Far Out Space Places, Journey to the Edge of Space & Time, The Skies Above, and Two Small Pieces of Glass. Join us for an exciting glimpse of the night skies filled with celestial objects, constellations, and more!

Winter Programs at The Homeplace

The Homeplace will be hosting Civil War themed programs, Saturday, February 12 and 19 from 10am-3pm. These programs will be offered in addition to the annual Fort Henry Anniversary Walk to be held again on Saturday, February 5, from 2:30-4pm.
These programs will offer a glimpse of life in February of 1862 when “Between the Rivers” was bracing for war. Confederate forces occupied Fort Henry with Federal forces moving up the Tennessee River. Come relive the events before and during the siege of Fort Henry on this free guided walk around the remnants of Fort Henry’s outer fortifications. Meet at Fort Henry Hiking Trail Parking Lot at 2:30pm on February 5, dress for the weather, waterproof footgear recommended, and moderate walking required.
Prior to the walk, The Homeplace will be hosting a free Fort Henry Anniversary Program from 12:30-2pm. On February 12 and 19, learn more about what life was like in this area during the years before war came to “Between the Rivers.” Visit The Homeplace for a glimpse of daily life in antebellum middle Tennessee. Enjoy a self-guided tour of a working second generation family farmstead and learn just how important rivers were to families in this area during the 1850s. Program available with paid admission; $4 adults, $2 ages 5-12, and free ages 4 and under.
Special events coordinator Cindy Earls said, “We are very excited to be offering more Civil War themed programs at LBL,” “To have programs at The Homeplace featuring what life was like before the war and offering a guided walk at Fort Henry during the anniversary of the battle, truly allows visitors a chance to see history come to life.”

Saturday Scavenger Hunts in January

Bring the kids to the Golden Pond Visitor Center from 1-4 PM each Saturday in January for some indoor fun. Saturday Scavenger Hunts will be available throughout January... stop by the desk to grab your list and start checking off items. This is a great activity for a cold or rainy day because all of the items on the list are inside the building. It's also a great opportunity to learn more about the natural and cultural history of LBL as you finish the scavenger hunt!

LBL Law Enforcement Officer wins Regional Award!

LBL is proud to announce that one of our law enforcement officers, Richard Jenkins, was recently named Law Enforcement Officer of the Year for the Southern Region of the USDA Forest Service. Officer Jenkins has worked for the Forest Service Law Enforcement at LBL for 10 ½ years. Duane Cameron, LBL’s FS Law Enforcement & Investigations Captain, said, “Richard has not only performed at an outstanding level in all areas of his job, he has continuously demonstrated exceptional leadership skills during many critical incidents and non-critical situations that have occurred at LBL. His ability to connect with victims, family members, and other employees has stretched throughout his career at LBL.” Cameron also stated, “His leadership and skills enable dangerous situations to be handled safely. Richard is a truly respected employee by LEO’s, FS employees, and local leaders. LE&I is very fortunate to have an employee like Richard, and his continued performance speaks for itself.” The staff at LBL congratulates Officer Jenkins on receiving this honor.

Free Cedar Christmas Tree Permits at LBL

We are once again offering Christmas tree permits beginning December 1 for visitors to cut cedar trees.
The permit, valid December 1-24, entitles a family to cut one cedar tree at no charge. During the weekends of December 11-12 and 18-19 permits are available at the Golden Pond Visitor Center. Throughout the week, Monday through Friday, come to the Administrative Office between 8:00 am - 4:30 pm to obtain permits.
Start a new holiday tradtion and bring the family out and seach for the perfect Christmas tree. The best looking cedar trees are usually found along roadsides or within old forest openings.
Cedar trees may be cut anywhere in LBL except areas within sight of U.S. Highway 68 or The Trace, cemeteries, the Nature Watch Demonstration Areas, campgrounds, lawns or other mowed areas.

Bring the family to LBL to enjoy upcoming educational kids programs! On Sunday, November 14 from 1 – 4pm there will be a Kids’ Fossil Field Trip. Meet at the Golden Pond Visitor Center, the trip involves some walking and climbing on rocky terrain. We’ll take you to a rocky shoreline where we can find all sorts of fossils, including crinoids, bryozoans, and ancient clams. While we climb around on the giant rocks and do some fun activities, you will learn how to spot fossils and figure out how they got here. The program is free to LBL visitors. Space is limited and registration is required. Call 270-924-2020 to reserve your space.

On Saturday, November 20 we will celebrate Cub Scout Day at the Nature Station – The event will be ongoing from 10am – 3pm. The program is free with NS admission. Bring your Cub Scouts to the Nature Station for a day full of activities and programs tailored just for them. Cub Scouts of different levels can work toward one of their achievement awards. A variety of staff-led programs, activities, and displays will be going on between 10am and 3pm, so you can arrive any time during that time span and be able to experience the full event. Celebrate the lives of some of our favorite Woodland Neighbors on Saturday, Oct. 23, at the 16th Annual Howl-O-Ween children’s program at the Nature Station.
Enjoy the non-scary side of Halloween with this kid-friendly daytime environmental education program. Dress in your favorite costume and take a guided hike along our character trail where the animals of the forest will “come alive” before your eyes. Meet friendly Shelly the Skunk and Bandit the Raccoon who will entertain you with their woodsy wisdom and wit.
Howl-O-Ween will provide a great chance for children to enjoy outdoor fun and entertainment while learning about some of our wildlife. Enjoy crafts, face painting, and live animals. \Admission to Howl-O-Ween is $5 per person. Tours begin at 2pm with the final tour leaving at 4:30pm. Visitors are encouraged to dress for the weather and bring an umbrella in case of rain. Costumes are welcome and encouraged.

Homeplace Wedding this Saturday!

Celebrate an 1850’s wedding at The Homeplace Living History Farm on Saturday, Oct. 16
The annual event brings to life an 1850’s wedding, including the customs, traditions, games, and festivities of the era with interpreters dressed in period clothing. This is one of the living history farm’s most popular events during the year. Visitors from throughout the region come to join the wedding re-creation of a typical couple from “between the rivers.”
Wedding games, traditional 19th century fiddle music, traditional dancing with a dance caller, wedding cake and cider, and a lively "shivaree" of the newly married couple follow the ceremony. Wedding preparation and trousseau viewing will be from 10am-12pm. The wedding ceremony and celebration is from 1:30-4pm. Program is included with Homeplace admission.

Wolf Week at LBL Oct. 10-16

We are celebrating Wolf Week the entire week of October 10-16. Join us at the Woodlands Nature Station to learn more about these intelligent, awe-inspiring, and rare animals. Fun, educational programs will be featured throughout the week for wolf enthusiasts of all ages.
The NS participates in the Red Wolf Recovery Program, a captive breeding program for the endangered red wolf. Red wolves were once declared officially extinct in the wild. Thanks to recovery efforts, they have been reintroduced into a wildlife refuge in North Carolina. Yet, red wolves are still designated as a critically endangered species. Wolf Week is an opportunity to learn about how LBL is helping in the recovery of these amazing creatures.

LBL’s 4th Annual Elk & Bison Prairie Celebration

Celebrate the wonders of the Elk & Bison Prairie (EBP) Saturday, September 18, from 10am to 4pm at the Golden Pond Visitor Center (GPVC) in Land Between The Lakes (LBL) National Recreation Area. Explore the beauty, wildlife, and history of the EBP during its most active time of year. The GPVC will host the celebration. The EBP’s Bugle Corps, “Friends of LBL” interpretive staff, local historians, and Forest Service personnel will be on-hand to help you learn about the prairie and provide hands-on displays about the prairie animals and plants. Other features include an EBP photography display and demonstrations on man’s historical use of prairie lands. There will be on-going historical hunting techniques presentations from Ted Franklin Belue on frontier hunting and Rob Smith with the atlatl. A slide presentation, entitled “Bugle Boys,” about the behavior of elk during their rut season, will be presented in the Golden Pond Planetarium at 12pm. Food vendor, Aurora BBQ, will be at the GPVC serving BBQ and other goodies. Don’t miss this once-a-year opportunity to hear an elk bugle, learn how people used prairie plants and animals, and just enjoy a beautiful September day!

Fee Waivers & Volunteer Opportunities on National Public Lands Day Sep. 25

Saturday, September 25, LBL will be waiving fees at participating day-use facilities in honor of National Public Lands Day (NPLD). General admission to The Homeplace (HP), Woodlands Nature Station (NS), Elk & Bison Prairie, and the Golden Pond Planetarium (GPP) show at 1pm will be free. Wranglers Campground will also be waiving day-use riding fees. Visitors can also pick up a coupon at NS, HP, or GPP for a “buy one, get one free” return visit for ages 13 and up. The return visit coupon, which expires November 30, 2010, will be good for a future one-time admission to either NS or HP (does not include special events).
LBL will join other National Forests and National Parks across the United States in participating in our nation’s largest one-day volunteer event for public lands. There will be opportunities for volunteers to participate in a shoreline clean-up or a trail maintenance project.
It is recommended, but not necessary, to call to register for volunteer work early. Registrations should be made by September 24, especially larger groups. There will be three events taking place that day. The first event is from 8:30am-4pm: a trail project on the North/South Trail, meeting at Grey’s Cemetery on Rd 130. Two events are from 9am-3:30pm: a shoreline clean-up with check-in at Nature Station, and a canoe/kayak cleanup with check-in at Neville Bay. New this year at The Homeplace (HP) is the 1850's County Fair and Storytelling Festival on Saturday and Sunday, September 4-5, 10am to 4pm each day. Step into the past and visit with historic trades' people as they demonstrate and sell their wares, learn about heritage farm animals, heirloom vegetables, and enjoy homemade goodies at the farmers' market. Learn how to play cricket, a popular 1800's game, from cricket historian Tom Melville. Enjoy the old-fashioned tradition of storytelling with some of the best storytellers in our region, Mike Beville, Cherrie Coleman, Gerry Gutfreund, Mary Ann Jordon, and Brother Don Bailey. An added twist to the traditional storytelling festival will be stories through music, thanks to talented string band, The Dixie Volunteers.

Campfire Caution at LBL

Visitors to Land Between The Lakes (LBL) National Recreation Area are advised to use extreme caution until further notice when having open campfires.
Due to drought conditions and high temperatures, the risk for wildfires is a concern at LBL. The greatest area of concern remains backcountry campsites, where dry, grassy areas and leaves surround campers. “Campers utilizing camp or cooking fires in backcountry areas create a very real threat of wildfires,” stated Trent Girard, Acting Fire Management Officer at LBL.
Campfires should be built in existing fire rings, or an area where a campfire already existed. Campfires should be monitored at all times, and completely extinguished when an area is left unattended, even if it is only for a short amount of time. Please report any unattended campfires immediately.
Everyone is reminded to always use caution when disposing of lit cigarettes and matches. Hot embers from unattended fires or cigarettes can easily be picked up by winds and blown into dry areas, causing wildfires even in developed camping areas and along roadsides.
LBL visitors are urged to immediately report any wildfires to Forest Service Personnel, or other law enforcement agencies by calling 911 or LBL’s 24-hr Dispatch at 1-877-861 2457.

Our very own Patrick Holcomb is named Southern Region Interpreter of the Year

Patrick Holcomb, an environmental education assistant at LBL, has received the Region 8 Interpreter of the Year Award for 2010.

The USDA Forest Service said the award is given to individuals who exemplify excellence in interpretation and conservation education and demonstrate these skills when communicating with customers. The agency recognized Holcomb for his solid performance at the Brandon Springs Group Center where he continues teaching the importance of conservation.

LBL is very proud of Holcomb who is now nominated for the Gifford Pinchot Excellence in Interpretation Award, which will be given Nov. 18 at the National Association of Interpretation conference in Las Vegas

As you're making plans for 4th of July weekend keep LBL in mind. On Sunday June 4 we will be celebrating Independence Day 1850's style at The Homeplace Living History Farm. Festivities will kick off at 1pm with the raising of the 1850's USA 30-star flag. A favorite activity in the 1850's was the reading of the Declaration of Independence, join the group reading after the flag raising. Enjoy a special performance by Kentucky statesmen Henry Clay, portrayed by George McGee. Spend the afternoon enjoying historic games for all ages, a pie eating contest, old-time music, and some mouth-watering watermelon.

If you would like to include some critters in your holiday plans head to Woodlands Nature Station for a 4th of July picnic with the animals. No matter what Dad enjoys, whether it's a fast paced ATV ride or a leisurely bike ride LBL is a great place to treat Dad to some much deserved recreation and relaxation.

National Get Outdoors Day June 12

In an effort to get more families, especially kids, outside exploring nature, the U.S. Forest Service and the American Recreation Coalition have designated June 12, 2010 as “National Get Outdoors Day.” Head out to LBL and celebrate a fun day of wilderness adventure, while helping connect youth to the great outdoors.

From 11am-4pm LBL will host the 2nd Annual National Get Outdoors Day Activities Expo at the Golden Pond Visitor Center. Come out if you would you like to get outdoors more, but just aren’t sure what kinds of outdoor activities are for you. Staff from LBL, Gander Mountain of Paducah and other outdoor enthusiasts will cover the basics on family camping, cooking in the outdoors, kayaking, geo-caching, and more!

Bring the family out for National Trails Day, Children's Day, or Dragboat Races June 5-6- LBL will be offering something for everyone!

In celebration of National Trails Day Land Between The Lakes (LBL) will be waiving fees at participating facilities on Saturday and Sunday June 5-6. Entrance to the Woodlands Nature Station, Homeplace, Elk & Bison Prairie and to the Golden Pond Planetarium show at 1:00 PM will be free. Wrangler’s Horse Camp will also be waiving day-use riding fees.

Staff and volunteers from LBL and "Friends of LBL" (LBL Association) have a National Trails Day project planned near Smith Bay on the North/South Trail. The beginning stages of a 1.5-mile re-route is scheduled including flagging the new trail and brush removal. Staff and volunteers will be meeting at Gray Cemetery at 8:30am and working from 9am-4pm. Gray Cemetery is located on Road 130, approximately 2 miles west of The Trace.

In addition to trail work opportunities there will be guided hikes led by LBL staff. At 2:15pm, Woodlands Nature Station will host "Be an Outdoors Kid" hike to teach basic outdoor skills. Or you may wish to join us from 7-8:30pm at Hematite Lake Trailhead for a relaxing 2-mile evening walk.

Participants volunteering to help out on the hiking or biking trails are encouraged to pre-register by calling 270-924-2007. Bottled water and Permethrin insect repellant will be provided; however, participants are encouraged to bring their lunch, sturdy boots, and work gloves with them.

For kids, or kids at heart, LBL has Children's Day at the Homeplace- the day will focus on 1850’s entertainment. Mother Goose rhymes and themed activities will help modern day kids experience old-fashioned entertainment including outdoor play, parlor games, stories, music, work bees, and homemade toys.

Activities will be taking place on the HP farm from 9:30am-4pm. Mother Goose stories and group games will be offered throughout the day at 11am-12pm, 1-2pm, and 3-4pm. Admission is $4 ages 13 and up, $3 ages 5-12, and 4 and under are free (includes HP admission).

Nashville native and professional storyteller, Cherri Coleman, will be at the HP to charm children with her whimsical portrayal of Mother Goose. Her folklore and traditional tales include games, songs, and hands-on discovery for young and old alike. Kids will also be able to collect Mother Goose rhymes throughout the day and turn them into a storybook to take home.

If you want to get your heart racing stop by Pisgah Bay on the north end of LBL. The Kentucky Drag Boat Association (KDBA) is inviting visitors to come to Kentucky Lake to kick off the 2010 season.

Spectators are invited to bring lawn chairs or ground blankets to Birmingham Ferry and enjoy an exciting day of racing. Racing events are scheduled for June 5-6, July 10-11, and July 31-August 1 from 10am to 5pm. Time trials will be held on Saturday and the final races will take place on Sunday. There is a spectator fee of $5 per person; children under 12 are free.
The heart-pounding events feature blown-alcohol boats, hydros and jet-powered boats, and flat-bottom racers skimming the water at speeds exceeding 150 mph.

Despite severe flooding on the Cumberland River, LBL Recreation Area facilities such as The Homeplace, Woodlands Nature Station, Brandon Spring Group Center, Elk & Bison Prairie, and North and South Welcome Stations are open. Some boat ramps, camping areas, and trails are still closed due to the danger of high water.

LBL management warns visitors to heed all roads closed signs and barricades. Please check with a welcome station or the Golden Pond Visitor Center before venturing into LBL to get an update on which areas are open. LBL Welcomes a New Female Red Wolf

On Friday, April 16, Woodlands Nature Station at Land Between The Lakes received a 3-year old female red wolf from the Knoxville Zoo in Tennessee. She will be a partner to LBL’s 7-year old male red wolf who lost his 15-year old partner in 2009. The red wolf is related to the gray wolf and coyote, but it is the only one of the species that is found exclusively in the United States. Both the gray wolf and red wolf are currently on the Federal Endangered Species List.

Bill Lisowsky, LBL’s Area Supervisor, invites everyone to come out and visit the new female red wolf. “The Nature Station has 150 species of native plants and 43 different species of animals. Other than our four red wolves in the captive breeding program each animal including our bald eagle, bobcat, vultures, coyotes, turkeys, and snakes are rescue animals that could no longer survive on their own.”

From 1973 to 1980, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) captured every single red wolf in the United States and declared the species officially extinct in the wild. This drastic measure was taken to establish a captive breeding program to save the red wolf population. Red wolves were being forced to breed with coyotes that moved into their territory jeopardizing the survival of the red wolf as a species.

Genetic testing that was performed on the 400 captured wolves revealed that only 14 were truly red wolves. In 1984 the USFWS and the American Zoo and Aquarium Association took this tiny remaining population and implemented a captive breeding program for the red wolf. LBL became a partner for that program in 1991.

Nature Station Lead Naturalist, John Pollpeter, said he was excited about the opportunity to host the new wolf and educate the public about red wolves, which used to be native to LBL. “Since we began with the last 14 red wolves in the United States we have been able to expand that population to 300. Red wolves generally mate for life; we’ve had wolf puppies at the Nature Station in the past and we’re hoping our new wolf partnership will produce puppies in the future.”

Please join us for LBL-wide programs, walks, demonstrations and more that will help you learn about and appreciate the land, water, plants, and animals that call LBL their home. LBL Facilities Open for Season

Land Between The Lakes (LBL) National Recreation Area begins its 2010 operations on March 1, by opening several popular visitor attractions. The Golden Pond Planetarium and North & South Welcome Stations open their doors March 1, along with Hillman Ferry, Piney, and Energy Lake Campgrounds. Beginning March 3, The Homeplace and Woodlands Nature Station will be open Wednesday through Sunday during March, and then open seven days a week beginning April 1. The Elk & Bison Prairie remains open from dawn until dusk every day, year-round. The Golden Pond Visitor Center, Wranglers Campground, and Turkey Bay Off-Highway Vehicle Area remain open year-round as well.

The Golden Pond Planetarium, open daily, provides a full dome viewing experience with digital multimedia equipment. New to the planetarium this year is Two Small Pieces of Glass. Returning to the planetarium in 2010 will be Blown Away: The Wild World of Weather, Far Out Space Places, and The Skies Above.

LBL’s spring calendar is full of a variety of fun programs for visitors of all ages and interests.

The LBL Fun Card provides your choice of 10 admissions to The Homeplace, Nature Station, Planetarium, or a combination of all three. 1-4pm, Sat., Feb., 6 join us for Fort Henry Anniversary Walk at Fort Henry Trails. 148 years ago, the Land Between the Rivers was bracing for war. Confederate forces occupied Fort Henry with federal forces moving up the Tennessee River. Relive the events before and during the siege of Fort Henry on this guided walk around the remnants of Fort Henry's outer fortification. Dress for the weather, waterproof footgear recommended, and moderate walking required. Program free to LBL visitors. Meet at Fort Henry Hiking Trail Parking Lot. 1-4:30 pm, Sun., Feb., 7 "Everything Eagles" Van Tour. Winter is the peak season for Bald Eagle viewing in LBL. Both our year-round resident eagles and visiting winter "snowbirds" are out looking for fish around the lakes. Spend the day visiting some of LBL's eagle-viewing hot spots during this staff-led tour. We will share tips on how to spot bald eagles in the wild and zoom in with spotting scopes for a closer look. $5 children /$7 adults. Registration limited. Reservations and full deposits required. Bundle up in your favorite sweater and experience the enchanting sights on a bald eagle viewing trip, offered again at Land Between The Lakes (LBL) National Recreation Area throughout the winter months.

Back by popular demand, LBL hosts a weekend of eagle viewing river cruises January 9-10, a special Martin Luther King, Jr. Day cruise January 18, and another Saturday lunch cruise January 23, for up close views of the eagles from the water.

Despite cold temperatures that usually keep people indoors, bald eagles thrive in winter conditions. What better way to view bald eagles than relaxing on a river cruise in the comforts of the spacious and beautifully appointed CQ Princess? River cruises depart from Kenlake State Resort Park Marina.

LBL also hosts eagle viewing van trips. Visitors will most likely see migratory bald eagles, gulls, and other waterfowl, as well as native wildlife species, such as deer and turkey. Van trips meet and depart from the Golden Pond Visitor Center unless otherwise indicated. Visitors are advised to dress appropriately for the weather and moderate walking. Also, don’t forget to bring binoculars and field guides.

Experience Pryor Creek as the early Scots-Irish settlers did by joining us at the bonfires for warmth, companionship, and some of the finest storytelling around. During intermission, experience the candlelit double pen house for an old-time snap apple play party, but be prepared for the unexplained as you follow the lighted trail beyond the security of the fires. This event will be held rain or shine, so be prepared for the weather. Chairs and blankets welcome.

Enjoy the non-scary side of Halloween with this kid-friendly evening program. Go for a guided night walk along a candle-lit trail through the woods and help look for our Nocturnal Neighbors.

LBL Fall Color

The LBL fall foliage here is changing a little bit more each day now. Currently, most of the dogwoods, sumacs, and blackgums are almost fully red, giving the roadsides a scenic appearance, even though the more abundant oaks and hickories still have green leaves. The maples, sweetgums, tulip poplars, and pawpaws are starting to turn now too. Roadsides and lakeshores offer scenic mixes of yellows, reds, oranges, and greens, with about 20% of the foliage having turned their fall colors.

Some scenic drives include the northern portion of The Trace, as well as the loop near the Woodlands Nature Station of Mulberry Flats, Bugg Springs, and Silver Trail Road. This loop is also a popular biking loop that totals less than 10 miles. Another nice way to enjoy the colors is by boat. Several nearby marinas rent boats by the hour or the day.

The trees at LBL are just beginning to show a bit of fall color. Right now you can see the sweet gum trees turning red, yellow in the poplar trees, and just a hint of red in the maple trees. Fall blooming flowers are adding a touch of color along roadsides.

The Homeplace 1850 Camp Meeting

Join us Sat. & Sun., Sep. 12 & 13 for The Homeplace 1850 Gathering Festival & Camp Meeting.

The first camp meetings were in the middle Tennessee and Kentucky area, and were characterized by highly emotional and physical responses of the participants to the day-long preaching. Many criticized camp meetings because of the intense emotions brought on by the fire and brimstone sermons. Regardless, throughout the 1800’s camp meetings remained popular.

Be a part of a traditional 1850’s camp meeting as The Homeplace re-creates this popular event. On Saturday see families set up their 19th century campsites, visit local trades people, help build a brush arbor, and more. On Sunday, take part in a traditional camp meeting, preaching and hymn singing.

Join us Labor Day Weekend for LBL’s Summer Finale! Outdoor activities will be going on all day September 5, 6, and 7th at the Woodlands Nature Station and the Homeplace. On Saturday Smokey Bear will be visiting the Nature Station and the Homeplace will be featuring live music from the Cumberland River Plowboys Old-Time String Band. Sunday afternoon will be busy with things going on at the Homeplace and Nature Station all afternoon. And on Monday afternoon the Homeplace will be hosting an ice cream social and the Nature Station will be leading a creek walk to look for crawly critters.

Homeplace Storytelling Festival

This Saturday, August 15th is the 2nd Annual Storytelling festival at the Homeplace!
There will be on-going storytelling from 1-4 pm with local storytellers including Sherry Coleman, Bill Williams, Bro. Don Bailey, and Mary Ann Jordan.
Stories were a way of passing on family history and folklore from one generation to the next. In keeping with tradition, the festival will include tall tales, myths, legends, and tales of life long ago. Feel free to bring your lawn chairs and blankets.
Admission to The Homeplace is $4 ages 13 & up, $2 ages 5-12, and 4 and under are free.

4th of July weekend events in LBL!

LBL is kicking off its Fourth of July events this Friday, July 3. Smokey Bear will be making several appearances at the Nature Station throughout the day while the Homeplace is hosting a scavenger hunt from 1-3.At 6 we invite everyone to meet up at the Hematite Lake Trailhead for a Family Sunset Hike. Remember to wear your bug spray!

On Saturday, July 4 from 1-4 the Homeplace is hosting their annual Independence Day gathering. Come listen to a public reading of the Declaration of Independence, enjoy a slice of watermelon, listen to a speech by Henry Clay, and join in on one of the many old-time games played throughout the day.The Nature Station is hosting the All-American Scavenger Hunt from 10-4 and will be taking some time to highlight the Bald Eagle at 11.

On Sunday Tim Parson, a local artist, will be showcasing 19th century wet plate photography at the Homeplace. Mr. Parson will be available to take photographs on a first come, first served basis for a fee from 10-12 and from 1-4.

Fox Ridge Prescribed Fire

Today around 10 am the LBL fire management team will start a prescribed (controlled) 357 acre fire in the Fox Ridge area north of the Homplace. We ask visitors to obey all posted signs and not to drive into thick smoke.

Nature Arts Day this Saturday

This Saturday, June 20, is Nature Arts Day at the Woodland’s Nature Station. Come to the Nature Station from 10 to 4 to visit with local artist and craftspeople. Arts and crafts will be available for purchase. Admission to the Nature Station is $2 for children ages 5-12 and $4 ages 13 and up. Children 4 and under get in for free.

In the evening head on down to the Golden Pond Observatory and see Celestial Imagery, a program sponsored by the West Kentucky Amateur Astronomers. Starting at 8 the WKAA will have several telescopes positioned on the lawn surrounding the observatory, located behind the Golden Pond Visitor Center. Admission in $2 for children and $5 for adults.

National Trails Day

LBL would like to thank all the volunteers who helped out last Saturday for National Trails Day.

14 volunteers and four staff members worked on a trail re-route of the North/South Trail around the Moss Creek picnic area. The re-route will move the trail off the busy road and deeper into the woods. While the re-route is not ready for hikers, volunteers from Wood-N-Wave, the Tennessee Trails Association, and several unaffiliated volunteers got a large portion of it completed this weekend.

The newest addition to the family

We are happy to welcome the newest addition to the LBL family. The first elk calf of the season was found Sunday afternoon in the Elk & Bison Prairie. Bugle Corps member Gary Travis found the elk calf in a wooded area after monitoring the movements of the mother’s radio transmitter.

Gary tagged the calf, pulled some ticks off and then left before the mother returned. The female calf is very young, only a few days old, and laid very still during the tagging.

This is usual behavior for very young calves. At this age their natural defense is to lay very still while the mother is away. After a week or two they will be strong enough to run away from predators (and people). At a month old they will begin to travel with the rest of the herd.

We ask that you don’t leave the road and search for this calf on your own. While the Prairie may be fenced in all animals within the area are wild and could harm you.

Summer is fast approaching and with it several opportunities for everyone to get out and enjoy the sunshine.

The first Saturday in June is National Trails Day. Volunteers will be out all day cleaning up many trails to get them ready for summer visitors. If you would like to volunteer either on your own or with a group please contact Emily Schmadeke at (270) 924-2007.

Also on Saturday, June 6, are the Homeplace Children's Day and a Sunset Canoe Trip.

The Homeplace Children's Day focuses on how children lived and worked on an 1850's farm.

This year's theme is "Sleep Tight on the Farm" and focuses on what it took to get a good night's sleep every night in the 1850's.

Activities will include making a toy bed, quilting, tick making (the stuffed mattresses used in the 1800's), and thread spinning.
Admission is $3 for children, $4 for adults.

The Sunset Canoe Trip has limited space available and reservations are required. The price is $25 per person and includes all day Nature Station admission. For more information call 270-924-2020.

Earth Day Weekend

This weekend LBL features programs, walks, demonstrations, and more that will help you learn about and appreciate the land, water, plants and animals that call LBL their home.

Dr. Chester's Wildflower Walk will be held on Saturday morning from 10 - 12:30, and Saturday afternoon from 1:30 - 4, at the South Welcome Station.

Flowers you can count on seeing include bluebells,

trillium, violets, chickweed, and many more.

The Nature Station will have a Native Wildflower Plant Sale Saturday from 9 - 5, and will also host a wildflower hike at Hematite Lake on Saturday at 11:15.

Dwarf Larkspur,

paw paw trees,

false garlic, and

bellwort are are just a few of the wildflowers blooming in that area.

Why Do We Use Prescribed Fire?

The build-up of fuels is one of the Four Threats to our National Forests. Prescribed fires will burn away some of those fuels, and produce benefits for both animals and visitors to LBL. A newly burned area draws wildlife and creates a good viewing opportunity for our visitors. Eventually, the area will produce more grasses and flowers than before the burn occurred.

1400 - Conditions are perfect - the crew inspects their gear, receives a briefing outlining the details of the burn plan, and makes final preparations for the prescribed burn at Neville.

1430 - Crew members are positioned on the perimeter of burn area - they use drip torches with a mixture of diesel/gas to start and spread fire along a continuous fireline to form a backfire. Backfires are used to contain fires to specific areas.

1500 - The main fires is ignited in short segments that are easily controlled by the crew. Prescribed burns can have many objectives - removing fuel from the forest floor (less heat, less damage), restoring native grasslands, and improving wildlife habitat are just a few.

1530 - Crew members constantly monitor weather conditions to ensure the objectives of the burn are being met. The weather must stay within certain parameters for humidity, temperature, wind speed and direction, as well as forecasted conditions for a safe and effective burn.

1600 - Prescribed burns are not a new concept - the American Indians intentionally set fires to stimulate plant growth on grasslands and keep forest areas open to produce food.

Burning is also a more cost effective and natural method than bulldozing, cutting, or using chemicals to control woody and invasive plants.

1630 - Many seeds of smaller plants will not sprout when they fall in a shaded area. Grasses and flowering plants successfully establish themselves on burned areas where they have full sunlight and thrive in the lack of competition from other vegetation.

Prescribed burns will help create the preferred habitat for some rare and declining species found in LBL, as well as improve general visibility and wildlife viewing.

1700 - Safety of the crew is an important issue during the burn. They must wear fireproof clothing, leather boots and gloves, eye protection, hard hats, and carry a pack containing water and their fire shelter.

1730 - Most animals are able to adapt when a fire occurs in their habitat. Game species run from the area, birds fly from it, small mammals and amphibians often burrow into the ground.

Crews will remain in the area after the fire has passed making sure the fire is completely out - one smoldering ember could start a fire.

1800 - Once the burn is complete, an after-action review is held to determine: What was planned? What actually happened and why? What can we do better next time?

Fallow Deer

If you plan your trip to the Nature Station early morning or late afternoon, you may catch a glimpse of the small herd of fallow deer residing in the area.

Fallow deer continue to have spots on their back into adulthood, unlike white-tailed deer that only have spots when they are young.

Sunday, April 12th - 2 to 4 p.m. at the Nature Station - Enjoy a 2-mile guided hike around Hematite Lake in search of wildflowers and wildlife. We will explore the woods and marshes of Hematite and discuss wildflower identification, ecology, and folklore.

Saturday and Sunday - April 18-19th - 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.
The Nature Station will be hosting a native plant sale throughout the weekend. Native plants are adapted to local conditions so they require less water and care, attract wildlife, increase biodiversity, and enhance the beauty of your yard.

Shooting star
Saturday, April 18th - 10am-12:30pm and 1:30pm-4pm
Dr. Edward W. Chester, Professor of Biology at Austin Peay State University and co-author of Wildflowers of the Land Between The Lakes Region, Kentucky and Tennessee will lead a leisurely walk along Bear Creek this area explodes with spring colors like few other spots we know. Bring your waterproof hiking shoes/boots and your questions. Program free to all LBL visitors. Limited to first 25 participants. Sign up 1 hour before program. Meet at the South Welcome Station parking lot.

LBL Continues to Reopen Facilities

LBL continues to reopen many of their facilities, including The Nature Station.

Open 7 days a week thru October, and Wednesday thru Sunday in November, you will find turtles, flying squirrels, frogs, and a variety of snakes inside.

Along with bobcat, wolves, coyotes, hawks, owls, turkey, fallow deer, and wildflower gardens outside. Our backyard is a great place for the entire family.

Nearby hiking trails include a 2.2 mile hike along Hematite Lake, and a 4.5 mile hike around Honker Lake - both hikes are rated easy to moderate.

Turkey Bay OHV reopened on Friday - the area consist of about 100 miles of primary, secondary, and tertiary trails for many different levels of OHV riding. Primitive camping is available, and please remember to "Call Before You Haul" to check trail conditions - 270-924-2000, and press 3.

Wranglers Campground and trails are now open. The campground offers a variety of camping opportunities from primitive to full-hookup sites, and their horse and wagon trails lead to some of the most scenic spots at LBL.

The ladies at The Homeplace were preparing to weave a rug on Saturday - it was a wonderful weekend to be at Land Between The Lakes!

Wildflowers

Wildflowers were pretty easy to find on the southern end of LBL this weekend. Bloodroot is plentiful, and just beginning to open.

Bluebells - a sure sign that spring is just around the corner!

Pennywort is a little harder to find, but

if you are looking for periwinkle, head out to Gatlin Point Lake Access Area - the left side of the road is covered.

Couldn't find a trout lily that was open, but this one is awfully close. If you are interested in wildflowers, the Nature Station sponsors many wildflower activities beginning with a Wildflower Hike at Hematite Trail on Saturday, April 11th, from 2-4 pm. Check the April calendar on our web site for other wildflower events.

We have a new show at the Golden Pond Planetarium this year - Journey to the Edge of Space and Time.

This dynamic show takes the audience on a journey to a black hole, galaxy clusters, and to the birth of the universe. With telescopes expanding our view, the pieces of a cosmic puzzle are falling into place, promising answers to once unanswerable questions. Shown daily at 2 p.m.

The Homeplace is gearing up for another fun season -

Programs this weekend include a trip through local history with former resident, Beverly Riggins Parker, through her photography display of Land Between the Rivers prior to and after acquisition by the Tennessee Valley Authority on Saturday March 14th, from 10 - 4.

On Sunday at 1, don't miss Rail Splitting - "Split rail" fences kept animals out of farm fields, lined road sides, and were used to fire tobacco when they rotted. Come out today and learn which wood is best for rails and try your hand at using a maul and wedge to make a fence rail or two.

Climbers at the Nature Station

Climbers worked at the Nature Station this week removing hazards from the tops of the trees.

Armed with safety equipment and harnesses, these guys make fast work of the snags.

The Trail Cleanup Day on Saturday was a huge success -

volunteers have done an amazing job helping with our cleanup efforts at LBL.

Steve and his group from WoodnWave helped clear trails,

while another group cleared debris on the ground at the Nature Station.

They certainly had their work cut out for them,

and their efforts were greatly appreciated.

Why Isn't LBL Open?

"Why isn't LBL open?" seems to be a question on the minds of a lot of people. Widespread damage as seen here to our North/South Trail, and hundreds of areas just like this take time to clear. We are working hard to make LBL safe for visitors, and will reopen as soon as possible.

Cedar Pond picnic area on the Tennessee state line received heavy damage to the parking lot, pond area, and trail system.

Crews have cleared much of the debris from the roadsides, but there is still much to be done.

Jenny Ridge picnic area has numerous large branches down and trees uprooted.

Many of the 250 plus cemeteries at LBL received some type of damage. A large tree fell on one of the grave markers at Tharpe Cemetery on Fort Henry Road. Jamie Bennett is in the process of contacting representatives from each of the cemeteries in LBL to let them know what, if any, damage occurred during the ice storm. If you need immediate access to a cemetery, or would like to be a representative of any cemetery located here, please contact Jamie at 270-924-2015.

Recovery Continues

This is a familiar sight along our roads and trails.

Many areas of LBL remain closed to the public - for a current list of facilities and areas that are open, visit our web site at http://www.lbl.org/ under IMPORTANT LBL TRAVEL CONDITIONS UPDATE.

Heavy equipment has been brought in to clear areas that were hardest hit.

Hillman Ferry campground sustained major damage to power lines,

a tree went through the roof of the Outpost,

trees littered roads throughout the campground . . .

and the camp sites as well. It will be impossible to reopen the campground as planned on March 1st, but every effort is being made to open Hillman Ferry and other camping areas by April 1st. Our reservation system will be operational as of April 1st as well for Piney, Hillman Ferry, Wranglers, and Energy Lake campgrounds. Please remember to use extreme caution when traveling thru Land Between The Lakes.

The Recovery Efforts Begin

The massive clean-up has begun . . . crews start to clear the area around the pens at the Nature Station - amazingly, none of the animals were seriously hurt.

High winds caused more trees to fall over highways that had already been cleared.

Crews cut 9 truckloads of firewood that were delivered to neighboring communities to help heat homes until electricity could be restored.

It will be a slow process, but we very anxious to get LBL open again.

LBL Slowly Reopening Areas

Several LBL backcountry camping areas, boat ramps, and picnic areas in the TN portion have been re-opened, along with the Ft Henry Trail System and the southern (TN) portion of the North/South Trail. Small game hunting is now permitted only in the Tennessee portion of LBL at this time.

The Elk & Bison Prairie has also been re-opened.

Visitors are strongly encouraged to be aware of their surroundings and know that they may encounter hazard trees and hanging limbs on the roads and in the woods. For more information call 1-800-LBL-7077, 270-924-2000, or visit http://www.lbl.org/.

LBL Closed To The Public

LBL remains closed to the public

due to severe damage from the recent ice storm,

which has made for unsafe conditions.
Only The Trace is open from Dover, TN to Grand Rivers, KY. The rest of LBL - all roads, areas, and trails (OHV, hiking, biking, and horseback trails), are closed to the public until further notice. All activities such as OHV riding, hunting, hiking, camping, sightseeing, etc... are not permitted at this time. Conditions will be re-evaluated next week.

Ice Storm on Friday

The majority of the damage here is on the Kentucky side of LBL and areas to our north -conditions remain extremely hazardous.

The entire Elk & Bison Prairie sustained a lot of damage with uprooted trees and major snags.

The fence surrounding the Prairie was almost completely covered with ice.

The animals seemed to have survived - all of the bison were out by the pond enjoying the sunshine........only saw a few elk, but as the wind picked up in the afternoon the noise of the falling ice was very stressful for them.

The sun shining on the ice was almost blinding - temperatures warmed up quickly today causing more trees and snags to fall.

Most of the wildlife have been very scarce during this storm - it's been hard on everyone. LBL is still without power and has been officially closed to the public - efforts continue to clear roads here and in surrounding communities.

The Ice Storm of 2009

An ice storm which was hailed as the worst natural disaster to hit Kentucky, began on Monday, January 26th. LBL and surrounding communities were very hard hit with hundreds of power lines down, and thousands of trees falling across roads and trails - the destruction is amazing.

Our saw crews have been working hard to clear The Trace, but trees continue to fall around them making conditions extremely dangerous.

If you can get past the destruction, it is truly beautiful.

The main road to Wranglers Campground was down to one lane and littered with debris.

The area around Cedar Pond was very hard hit - the road is passable, but use extreme caution as trees are still falling in that area.

Power lines at the Snack Shack on Golden Pond Road - many have collapsed under the weight.

These photos don't begin to show the magnitude of damage here with more to come as temperatures drop well below freezing tonight and winds pick up tomorrow. This area is totally without electricity, phones, and cell phone service - it's going to be a long road to recovery.

Christmas Bird Count Results

A great group of 23 participants searched the forests and shorelines of the northern section of LBL and its outskirts again this year. Despite high winds, which made birding by ear difficult and probably made many of the smaller songbirds stay under cover, we totaled 97 species on count day. This is slightly higher than average for the LBL count, which has tended to range in the low-to-mid-90s over the past decade.

This year, perhaps due to the very windy weather, we counted fairly high numbers of many waterfowl sheltering in the backs of bays, but fairly low numbers of many songbirds. Some of the species that appeared in high numbers included: Gadwall, Northern Shoveler, Ruddy Duck, Pied-billed Grebe, Least Sandpiper, Bald Eagle, European Starling (mainly seen in areas on the outskirts of LBL), Cedar Waxwing, and Savannah Sparrow. Some of the more unusual sightings included: 2 Blue-Winged Teal on Lake Barkley near Kuttawa; a Golden Eagle on Lake Barkley near Fenton Bay; 13 Sandhill Cranes near the Nature Station; 7 Horned Larks; 5 American Pipits; 3 Chipping Sparrows still in the area; 1 Long-Tailed Duck and 1 Brown Pelican at Kentucky Dam; 4 Black-bellied Plovers; and 5 Western Sandpipers. Some of the conspicuously missing or low-counted species (besides across-the-board low counts of songbirds) were: Northern Pintail (none); Wood Duck (none); Northern Bobwhite (none); Double-crested Cormorant (lower than usual); Brown Thrasher (none); Red-breasted Nuthatch (none); and Rusty Blackbird (none).

Bison Auction Saturday

LBL will hold their annual bison auction on Saturday, January 24th. The sale will begin at 9:00 a.m. CST at the Elk & Bison corral located on the east side of The Trace (also KY-453) just north of the intersection with Highway 68. An approximate list of animals will include: 12 adult cows (born 1991-2005), 1 female born in 2006, 12 yearling heifers (born 2007), 3 bulls born in 2006, 7 yearling bulls, and a mix of 29 bull and heifer calves (born 2008). Elk & Bison Prairie

Take a trip thru our Elk & Bison Prairie - you never know what you might see! The cost is $5 per vehicle, and you are welcome to drive around the 3.5 mile loop for as long as you'd like. The Prairie is open daily from dawn until dusk, and the best viewing times are early morning and late afternoon - about an hour or two before sunset.

Weekend Eagle Cruises At LBL

This weekend, we hosted several Eagle Cruises aboard the luxury yacht CQ Princess. Guests cruised down Kentucky Lake and enjoyed lunch as they scanned the shores for Bald Eagles.

January and February are the best times to view eagles at LBL. They prefer quiet, secluded areas along the shoreline, and our tall trees provide perfect nesting and roosting sites. Each of the weekend cruises saw between 20 - 25 eagles during their 3 hour tour. LBL staff were on hand to tell the story of the Bald Eagle's recovery, help spot wildlife, and answer questions.
